WHERE DOES UR $$ GO?

How it breaks down

The cost of each item can be broken down into roughly three sections. Production cost, Tax, Rainbow Youth donation, and what we at Rainbow Action Tāmaki receive.

- Production cost is how much it costs for the item to be made. These range from most expensive production (hoodies and crew shirts), to least expensive production (all other shirts and tank tops).

- 15% of every sale goes to IRD in taxes.

- Rainbow Youth receives $20 per item with the "Mana Irawhiti" design.

- Rainbow Action Tāmaki receives the remaining profit for all products after production cost and the koha to RY is removed. Because we wanted to keep prices as predictable as possible, this part varies a bit, but is usually around $20-$25. All profits received are used to support actions and events run by RAT.

Decision Making

We needed to balance a few things. Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way- the production cost. We all need clothes (unless you live in a nudist colony, ka rawe for you!) and most of us are pretty hard up for cash right now. Unfortunately the fact is, cheap clothes and fast fashion feed into human exploitation. We did not want to add to that with our kākahu, so we chose to work with a production partner who we could trust. That comes with a price tag and is where the bulk of each purchase will go.

We wanted our prices to be easy to understand, and as predictable as possible- no extra cost to you on a curved fit please! We also chose round numbers because those are easier to remember (even if it meant a bunch of math on our end- that’s our problem not yours e hoa <3).

We are doing this to fundraise a little- having our own speaker and mic so you can hear our lovely voices without us having to ask around for what’s available and work with unfamiliar equipment would be rad, for a start. This part has the most variation between clothing styles, because otherwise the pricing would start to get a bit confusing at your end. We typically get around $20-$25 from each purchase, except for products with the "Mana Irawhiti" design where our profit sits around $5.

Finally, we also wanted to support our whānau at Rainbow Youth, a fixed amount of $20 per purchase of products with the "Mana Irawhiti" design goes to that (because we’d like things to be a little predictable for us too <3). They are having to do a lot of mahi keeping our community alive and well in these times- work they have far more experience and infrastructure in place for than we do. Knowing that kaupapa is supported allows us to breathe a sigh of relief and focus on being ngā kiore you know and love. This part has the most variation between clothing styles, because otherwise the pricing would start to get a bit confusing at your end.

Money Stuff

Over here is a graph updated monthly outlining where the money fundraised from product sales has gone. We plan to update this graph once we get a better idea of the costs end of things (sales tax etc.) so that we can be as transparent as possible.

This info isn't ready yet!

Thanks for your patience whānau
